    Speech: Indiscipline cases among students

Good morning to the Principal, fellow teachers and students of SMK Sarawak. Today I shall be presenting a speech entitled ‘ Indiscipline among students’ as the as the Disciplinary Teacher.

What I am about to address today is surely no longer new to most of you: the level of disciplinary today in school is getting from bad to worse. It is quite disheartening to see how students who have been sent to school to receive a firm foundation in education end up being involved in crimes and breaking school rules on a regular basic instead.

One of the main unhealthy activities that is growing in popularity amongst students is playing truant. While these students’ patents mistakenly believe that their children are studying hard at school, they are in fact loitering at shopping complexes, video arcades, Internet cafes and other popular teenage haunts. They end up lying to their parents and neglecting their studies.

Some of the boys really lose their way in the process and end up being involved in gang fights and other life- threatening activities. Some students also pick up bad habits which maybe lifelong such as smoking and drinking. This would surely have an adverse effect on their lives.

Sadly, some students have also resorted to violent crimes such as robbery, kidnapping to make quick money. The repercussions of getting caught for such activities are so great that they can leave a lifelong scar on a person.

There may be many reasons to explain why students resort to all these activities. Perhaps they have been neglected by their parents. Perhaps it is peer influence or even temptation. But whatever the reason may be, it cannot justify why you, as a student, should opt to choose such activities to release your frustration.

I would like to end off by saying that you have been blessed with chance to have a brighter future. Please do not throw it all away by involving yourself in all these activities. If you need to speak to someone about any problems you may be facing, remember that you can approach any teacher or speak with a students counselor. This is a more positive and effective means of solving you problems.

    Thank you for listening.

    Narrative : Jungle Trekking

Last Sunday, my family and I went to a nature park to do a jungle trekking. My father drive us there. We left our house at seven in the morning because we wanted to reach the place early. We were very exited about the trip.

We reached the nature park at 8.00 a.m. we checked in at the registration counter. We were given a map of the nature park, which we studied carefully. My father asked for directions to the river and also about the guide that he had asked for earlier when he made the reservation.

We were told that the guide would be with us shortly. Just then, an Orang Asli man walked up to us, smiling broadly. He introduced himself as Galau and was very polite, helpful and friendly. We checked our equipment to make sure that we had everything and then set out on the trek. It was about 8.30 a.m. by then.

A path led off from the head office into the jungle. We followed Galau and walked between tall trees. As we walked further down the path, it become darker and the trees grow closer together. As we walked, we saw small animals such as squirrels, birds and lizards on the trees we heard the sound of birds and insects.

It was a long walk to the river. Sometimes we stopped to rest. At last, at about 11.30 a.m, we reached the river. We were so hot and tired, that we quickly changed into our swimming costumes and jumped into the cool and refreshing water. After swimming for a while in the river, we came out and had a picnic on the river bank. Then, we rested for a while.

At 2 p.m, we decided to hike back to the park entrance. Galau led us back quickly through a shortcut. It was a long walk back. We reached the entrance about an hour later. By then, we were all very tired but we were happy. We had tea at the rest house. Then we got into the car and drove home. I really enjoyed the hike and so did the rest of my family. We intended to go there again in the near future.

    Sample Essay 3

Describe some of the things you like doing least, and say why you find them distasteful.

I dislike getting up early in the morning to go to school. It is not that I dislike school. I dislike having a drag myself out of the bed when it is still dark outside and when my eyes refuse to open, especially after having only a few hours sleep because of watching television till late the previous night. If only school would start a bit later then everything will be fine. Then I would not have to get up so early, I would not have to wait my turn to use the bathroom and best of all I would not have to jerk myself from my warm comfortable bed.

However the moment I hit the crisp morning air on my way to school, my whole outlook changes. Ah, the cool air is invigorating. Life is wonderful. School is wonderful with all my friends and surroundings.

It is always in the midst of an interesting conversation with my friends that the school bell must ring. Then we will have to head for the classroom. This is one thing I dislike. We obey the bell unthinkingly. Our conversation is shot to pieces, never to be recovered. By the time we have been so eagerly talking about earlier. So we have to talk about something new. Then again the bell will ring to interrupt us. I simply detest that bell.

As I said before, school is wonderful. However its wonderfulness is often reduces by the excessively hardworking teachers who load us with homework. Every teacher expects us to complete his assigned work, not taking into account that five other teachers expect us to do their homework too. So when I reach home in the afternoon I have to slog for hours before I get through all the assignments. Who can blame me for not doing them well? So much to do every other day is not exactly fun. As the saying goes “ all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”, the teachers should consider that we have other more interesting things to do and we should spend time doing them. Life should not revolve around homework only.

Come weekends, it is lovely to sleep late without worrying about getting to school on time. The joy of lying in bed listening to the activities of living things going about their business is particularly pleasant. The dogs bark, the birds sing, my mother makes breakfast and my younger brother snores away on his bed. I just close my eyes and do nothing.

However all good things must end and so it is with lazing in bed. Sooner or later my mother would come and make us get up. It is time again for weekly house- cleaning. We would have to wash the front porch, mow the lawn, trim the hedge and do dozen other chores. Grudgingly I would go through the motions of work and gradually finish the chores by lunch. I always wonder why we must repeat the same chores every week. Can’t we let the grass grow a bit longer, the porch get a little dirtier? How much difference will a little neglect make? Precious little, I suppose. Nevertheless, kids do not have power and we have to listen to the grown- ups. So, much I dislike these weekly chores, I have to do them. I promise that I will not do them when I grow up. By then they will be done by my children, hopefully.

Watching soap operas on TV is one thing I like doing least. I cannot understand how some people get so agitated over the antics of the actors on TV. Great effort is needed for me to tolerate the ridiculously loud TV blaring out whatever is said by some superstars. Ordinary life itself is filled with enough drama and excitement to stimulate the senses. Why do people go on seek more of these make- believe excitement on TV? Why do they not spend their time in more creative pursuits, like reading or conversing with one another? I watched one soap opera programme once, and that was more than enough. The show struck me as being silly and time- wasting. Yet many people indulge in this passive past-time, getting worked- up for nothing. I suppose it is a kind of addiction. I do not wish to become an addict so I never watch soap operas anymore.

There are other distasteful things that I do not like to do, but these are few in number. Most things do have some kind of loveliness in them. Just as the popular song goes: “Everything is beautiful, in it’s own way”, there is beauty around us in everything we do. I look at the beautiful things and enjoy them. Distasteful things pale by comparison.

    Meaning of words:

    2. Detest: to hate somebody or something very much.
    3. Excessively: greater than what seems reasonable or appreciate.
    4. Slog: to work hard and steadily at something.
    5. Indulge: to allow yourself to have or to do something that you like.
